JESSE TALBERT

JESSE TALBERT
c1750 - 1822

Jesse Talbert was born about 1750, likely in Virginia or Maryland, and migrated to Caswell County North Carolina where he married Susannah Slade in about 1778. Official birth and marriage records have not been found for Jesse and Susannah, but their first child, Thomas was born in February 1779.

Jesse Talbert is listed in Lucian Lamar Knight’s “Georgia’s Roster of the Revolution” under the heading “Soldiers’ Grants List”, p 399-401. In 1988, DAR reevaluated Jesse’s Revolutionary War service stating “No proof found that land grant which this man received was for Rev Service”. A DAR applicant would have to prove correct service for Jesse Talbert.

Jesse and Susannah Talbert moved to Georgia in about 1784 where daughter, Elizabeth was born in 1797. (1870 Amite Co MS Census gives birthdate and place)

Exactly when Jesse and Susannah Talbert moved to Amite County, Mississippi is not known. However, in the 1810 Amite County census, Jesse is enumerated as the head of household with 1 white male over 21, 2 white males under 21, 1 white female over 21, and 1 white female under 21.

Susannah Slade died about 1817 and Jesse Talbert died after writing his will on 23 August 1822 found in Amite Co Will Book 1, page 32, naming sons Thomas, Lewis, Abner, Silas, daughters Hannah Taylor, Elizabeth Jenkins and heirs of deceased daughter Nancy Montgomery. Jesse Talbert’s daughter, Elizabeth married James Jenkins on 10 October 1817 in Amite County. Elizabeth and James Jenkins’ daughter, Amanda married Stephen Jackson in 1842. In the 1880 Amite County census, Elizabeth Jenkins is enumerated in the household of Stephen Jackson. Stephen and Amanda Jackson had 12 children, one of whom was Thurza Ann Missouri Jackson, born 1845, who married James Marion Tatum, son of William and Elizabeth (Betsy) Taylor Tatum.

Thurza Ann Missouri and James Marion Tatum were the parents of William Lee Tatum who married Mary Elizabeth McLain. William Lee and Mary Elizabeth Tatum were the parents of Mary Elizabeth Tatum who married Emmett Lewis Moorer. They were the parents of my mother, Mariann Moorer who married my father, Thomas Williford Worthington.
