Isaac Hollingsworth was one of eight children, all of whom moved to the Mississippi Territory. The parents are purported to be Joseph Hollingsworth and Lydia Comer Hollingsworth of Union County, South Carolina. Isaac, his wife, children, siblings and their families came to Lawrence County, MS by 1810 via Tennessee. Isaac served in the Mississippi Militia in the War of 1812 in Captain William Smith’s Company, and fought in the Battle of New Orleans. This Hollingsworth line descends from Scots-Irishman Valentine Hollingsworth, who emigrated to Pennsylvania in the early 1600s. Brother Jacob and family traveled with Isaac and family to Lawrence County, and their sister Malona, who married Robert Steen, was also in Lawrence County, MS, by 1815. Other siblings were Enoch, Robert, Tamar (m. Mr. Brock), Rachel, and Samuel.

Isaac married Mary Dorcas Smith, and they had 12 children: Addison (b. 1804), Isaac Jr. (b. 1811), Isham (b. 1810, m. Elizabeth Miller), Mary Ann (b. 1806, twin of W. S., m. Isaac Riser), William Smith (b. 1806, twin of Mary Ann, m. Mary Clarissa Morris), Jacob (b. ca. 1810), Joseph (b. ca. 1812), Sarah (b. 1805, m. George Tillman), Nancy (b. 1808, m. David Preacher Riser), Elizabeth (b. 1809), Samuel H. (b. 1813, m. Linnie Smith), and Robert (b. 1816, m. Jemima Smith). The family moved to Hinds County, MS, before 1830, then moved to Newton County, MS, by 1840.

Isaac Hollingsworth and family were early members of Palestine Baptist Church in Hinds County, and were founding members of Macedonia Primitive Baptist Church in Newton County, MS. His son Rev. William Smith Hollingsworth was an early minister at Bethesda Baptist Church in Hinds County, where son-in-law Isaac Riser had donated the land for the church. Charter members were Collins, Riser, Hollingsworth, and other families.

The Hollingsworths and Risers had extensive farming interests in Hinds and Newton Counties. Their children attended Hillman and Mississippi Colleges before the Civil War. One of the Hollingsworth homes in Hinds County survived the Civil War, and Isaac Hollingsworth’s home in Newton County still stands.
